So what exactly is going on with NASA's space
program? Well if you said nothing, then you are wrong! NASA has ensured the
United States that they will be the top space exploration agency in the world
for many years to come. NASA is making advances in technology and aerospace
that will be able to send humans out deep into space to explore the solar
system, to captured asteroids to harvest materials, and to NASA will be landing
humans on Mars within the next decade! NASA has also been working on the Space
Launch System or SLS for short. They are manufacturing a new heavy lift rocket
that will essentially send the new Orion space craft into orbit.
Sadly, the space shuttles have flown their last
missions. Shuttles Endeavor, Discovery, and Atlantis have all flown their last
missions into space. Atlantis flew its last mission into space July 8th 2011,
this was the 135th shuttle mission since the program started 20 years ago.
Atlantis carried spare parts and supplies to the space station to keep it
afloat while the shuttle program has ended. The good news is that the program
is coming back better than before. Orion, the new multi-purpose vehicle is
capable of travelling beyond the low Earth orbit or LEO, will serve as deep
space exploration, will carry the crew, and conduct regular space operations
(docking, rendezvous, extravehicular activity). This spacecraft will also be
carrying loads to the space station.
