Thoughts on NASA Shutdown

So by now everyone knows that NASA is a part of the Government shutdown. What I want to know is, if how this is affecting the astronauts, I mean, I know that there is a small section of people that the astronauts can talk to, but to shutdown mission control completely with people out there is outrageous. For all of the people wondering about the astronaut's mission will not be updated on their status. For the people following Curiosity and the mission in Mars, there will be no pictures, videos, or samples found released until the gov. decides to start up again. Maybe I am missing something, and I know I do not have all of the details on the shutdown, but it is just weird to me and I just think that they should not have shut down NASA when there are lives at stake. Space is a very dangerous place. Anything at any given time can go wrong. On a side note, Barrack Obama was talking about how most people with government jobs will not be paid, troops in foreign countries will not be brought back home for the time being, and the people whose businesses rely on places like the Smithsonian and the Statue of Liberty, will be out of luck. Many people are affected by this. I keep rambling because, I am not the only one in shock about this, and I cannot recollect my thoughts on this matter. Getting back to the point, in my opinion, I believe this is all about money, everyone agrees, I guess that in and of itself makes it a fact. The government has a huge budget, and NASA is not the center of attention when it comes to receiving money. When you go to their website it states this, "Due to the lapse in the federal government funding, this website is unavailable. For all of you that do not know this, Last year NASA accounted for .5% of percent of the government’s 3.4 trillion dollar budget. That is roughly 18.4 billion dollars. From 1958 to 2011, NASA has made 526.18 billion dollars and the average from 1958 to 2011 was around 9.928 billion dollars a year. What I am saying is, the government spends more money in other places than on NASA so I do not believe NASA should not have been shut down. But since it was, US.gov had this to say; "We sincerely regret this inconvenience." I am guessing they are talking about shutting down the website, since of course, it takes so much money to run a website (sarcasm). So, no Mars rover updates, no Hubble space telescope pictures, and no ISS updates. Like I stated before, I may be missing the point here and correct me if I am, Help me understand what is going on.

Truly this is an inconvenience to us all.
