The Ozone is Healing!

The Ozone is Healing!

The ozone layer is one layer of the stratosphere, the second layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. The stratosphere is the mass of protective gases clinging to our planet. In other words, the ozone is like the Earth’s sunscreen. Let us get to the point. In 1981, there were clues leading to a disruption in the ozone layer. Around 1984, a noticeable hole appeared in the ozone layer very quickly. On September 16th, 1987, representatives from different nations around the world drafted a treaty known as the Montreal Protocol. This protocol was the beginning of the international agreement to phase out substances that deplete the Earth’s ozone layer. The main agent in ozone depletion are CFCs. CFCs  is a gas that comes from everything such as spray cans and air conditioners.

The important thing is, now there are notable changes in the ozone’s  size. Scientists at MIT and across the globe have noticed considerable healing in the ozone layer. The ozone hole has shrunk in size about 4 million kilometers since the year 2000 when ozone depletion was at it’s peak. “We can now be confident that the things we’ve done have put the planet on a path to heal,” says lead author Susan Solomon, the Ellen Swallow Richards Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Science at MIT. “Which is pretty good for us, isn’t it? Aren’t we amazing humans, that we did something that created a situation that we decided collectively, as a world, ‘Let’s get rid of these molecules’? We got rid of them, and now we’re seeing the planet respond.”
